Art and Design Overview
At Wark C of E Primary School we are passionate about the arts and our art curriculum reflects this in its approach to the teaching and learning in the subject. Our aim is to enable children to communicate through the arts, giving children a voice through self-expression and individual creativity. Our art curriculum is designed in a way that enables children to think, work and communicate like an artist. As a school, we are ambitious in our approach to teaching art by allowing children an opportunity to acquire and develop knowledge and skills associated with art and represent their learning during the creative process.
Our whole school approach to curriculum design is inspired by Ebbinghaus' curve of forgetting and our Art curriculum is no different. Through Bruner's spiral curriculum concept children will experience and learn about a wide range of art techniques, including developing ideas, mastering techniques and taking inspiration from the greats. They will revisit these skills throughout the year focusing on different art mediums within these cycles. This will inevitably develop independence, initiative, originality and confidence in art.
During the twice yearly Take One Picture project all children will develop an impressive knowledge and understanding of other artists, craft makers and designers. The ability to select and use materials, processes and techniques skilfully and inventively to realise intentions and capitalise on the unexpected. With this ethos in mind children will develop a passion for and a commitment to the subject.

Art in action!
Take One Picture
Take One Picture is The National Gallery's programme for primary schools, which aims to inspire a lifelong love of art and learning. Twice a year, we take one picture from a famous artist to inspire cross-curricular work across the whole school. All children are exposed to the same piece of artwork at the beginning of the project and as a class and as individuals they choose their own learning inspired by it. The children are exposed to a wide range of artists from different countries, ethnicity and backgrounds through this learning. |
