History Curriculum
At Wark C of E Primary we have a bespoke history curriculum that has been tailored to meet the context of our area and the needs of all pupils. The unique curriculum design based on Ebbinghaus' curve of forgetting allows pupils to build knowledge of different time periods throughout their life in school. Curriculum content is split into key strands permeating all stages of the curriculum. Pupils will build knowledge using golden strands such as ‘Way of Life’, ‘key events’ or ‘conflicts’. Pupils will re-visit time periods over a number of years rather than ‘blocking’ content for specific year groups. Teachers will regularly remind pupils of previously learnt knowledge and how it links to current learning.
There are carefully planned visits to link to the scheme of learning; this provides enhancements to learning, alowing children to embed learning through experience. We are fortunate to have nearby sites such as Vindolanda for the Romans.
Some elements of our history curriculum are covered through the Power of Reading spine for English e.g. 'Ug, Genius of the Stoneage', and 'Wolf Brother' cover technology, conflict and way of life during the stone age.
