Class 3 - Week 7 - 13/7/20 - 17/7/20

For those of you working and learning from home in these troubling times we are doing our very best to support and continue the education of all children. We hope that you will find the links and resources that we upload to these pages useful and that you will engage your children in lots of different learning opportunities. Above all, stay well and stay safe.

Week 14 - Take One Picture

L.S. Lowry (1887-1976), British
Coming From The Mill, 1930 (oil painting)
Picture
What can we see?
Spend some time together looking at the artwork. What can you see? What do you think is happening? Where are all those people going or coming from? What does their posture tell you about how they are feeling? What about the colours Lowry has used, how does this portray emotion? What do you know already about the 1930s Britain? What are those buildings in the background? What do you think about the way the buildings are drawn/painted in comparison to the people down below? What shapes/lines/patterns can you see? What does the word "Mill" in the title refer too? What kind of mill? Are they flour mills where bread is made, or textile mills? What does the shop in the far right sell? Is it a post office? There's a postbox outside. Look at the children at the foreground? Is that a park over the fence? How do you get in? I wonder if anyone is going to start a game of football with that ball? Lowry LOVED football. He was a big Manchester City fan!
Write down all your initial responses around the image, use my questions above for inspiration.
History:
Research what it was like during the industrial revolution in Britain in the 1930s by watching this video: Click here!
KS1: Look back at the painting after watching the video. List and label all the features of industry that you can see. What do you notice? What tells you that this is a working mill?
KS2: Research Sir Richard Arkwright (1732-1792). He was an entrepreneur who created a machine that would revolutionise industry and influence Lowry!
English:
Pick a person in the painting. Describe what they are doing, using a diary entry. Focus on your five senses throughout the different times of day; before work, during work and after work.
Art:
KS1: Illustrate your diary entry to show what the person's life was like at the time. Think about your colour choices to portray the right emotions. What images would you draw?
KS2: Compare this image, Coming from the Mill to the sketch, The River Irwell at the Adelphi. List the similarities and differences in the techniques Lowry used. Draw your own sketch in the style of Lowry of your village/farm or a familiar location to you.
